English

These are a few of the lessons that are expanded upon in Jimmy Reid’s 10 HOUR INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO SERIES

The reason amateurs and pros alike find it hard to aim, and therefore pocket balls while aiming with ENGLISH is twofold:

1st.. It requires correct judgement which is only possible if it is confident judgement, to be confident, it must be practiced with success.
2nd.. WHEN ENGLISH IS USED, THE INSTRUMENT YOU ARE SHOOTING WITH, NAMELY THE POOL CUE IS NOT AIMED AT THE TARGET. This happens in a lot of sports, although none of them require as much precision as pool does. For example; Bowling – the bowler allows for the amount of curve and speed neccessary to hit the pocket. Archery – allowances are made for speed, distance, wind etc.. GOLF IS THE CLOSEST TO POOL IN DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY TO MASTER IE..Hand – eye coordination, pool is more mental ( 95%) – golf ( 80%).

In pool you must think more shots ahead than in golf, golf is obviously more physical. The masse’ would be comparable to a get out of trouble extreme slice or hook, a little right or left english in pool compares to a little fade or draw in golf. There are all kinds of winning trick ( knowledge ) shots in both games that you must have in your repertoire in order to excel at either sport. In some ways the only real comparison between the 2 games, is the challenge and dedication required to master either. In pool there is no such thing as a natural, no one has ever picked up a cue for the first time and made more than they missed, in golf no one has ever played that hasn’t whiffed ( missed the whole ball ), improvement occurs with practice because your mind instinctively blocks out the misses and remembers the makes… So practice until you visualise the cb against the ob at the correct cp no matter what english you are applying to the cb. Below are a few tricks to aiming the cb shooting medium firm speed with english…

Center ball english ( c ). It is possible, to have an infinite # of cueball contact points, for example; if you had moved your tip 1/1000 of a millimeter to the right from this center ball hit, it would be possible for 13,000 different hits to move a 13mm tip one full tip away from center. This is a factoid – however useless…

1 tip of right center ( rc ); Used preferrably to cinch an ob I happen to be cutting a little left, or when banking an ob ball a little left…

3 tips toward 3 o’clock. This is maximum right spin, barring a masse’. Will throw or bank an object ball ( ob ) as far as possible to the left, the ob will take 2 tips of 9 o’clock english from this 3 tip-3 o’clock hit because it loses one tip of spin in transference. For safety or position play, whether hitting a rail or ob 1st, the cb will come off the rail with maximum right hand spin..

Back to center ( c ); Stops the cueball when hitting an ob straight on. Causes ob’s to kiss off each other exactly where they meet…Stopping the cb on a long shot it is neccessary to hit the cb a little below center, all these hits are medium firm unless otherwise specified…

Looks like 2 tips toward 8 o’clock ( 8 ). Used for;
Position play, drawing the cb little back from the cbobcp* just a little toward the lower left than would be the center ball normal deflection of the cb off the ob. Would also be used to bank an ob causing the ob to react w/ 1 tip of 2 o’clock ( high right english )…
* See abbreviations on right.

2 tips toward 10 o’clock ( 10 );
Ob spins 1 tip toward 4 ( ob loses 1 tip of spin in transference ).
Cb goes further through the obcp than would be the normal c to c where they meet deflection, the cb then fights to spin left after hitting a rail…

10:30: The perfect equal amount of left spin and follow, by this I mean, neither are dominant, the cb will transfer 4:30 spin to the ob, which is another perfect combination of right spin and draw.
Notice how everything is exact equal opposite…

12: Causes the cue ball to take maximum top spin and followthrough of the obcbcp.
Imparts 6 o’clock ( 6 ) spin to ob, useful when trying to make ob’s kiss off other ob’s more than would be natural…

12: When banking an ob that is near a rail, this hit will cause the cb to hug the rail.
This spin will also bring the cb back to the rail when kicking at a full ob within 1 diamond of that rail…

Looks like 3 tips toward 1:15.
Follows through the hit and spins toward the right.
Causes the ob to take 7:15 spin…

Maximum right english…

4:30: The perfect combination of draw and right english…

5:30: Draw with a little right hand spin (english )…

7:30: Perfect combination of left spin and draw…

10:30: The perfect combination of follow and left english…

Here I’m hitting the cb w/ rc english, this will assist the ob toward its left and into the pocket.

Rc is where my tip is actually pointed at the ob in the shot above…

Hitting the cb at 10 here will create follow and left english…

This is where my tip is aimed in the shot above, at 10, just like the cb…

Hitting the cb at 2, and aiming my tip at 2 on the ob..

Right center to right center ( rc to rc )…

I’m preparing to shoot this shot with high right english at 1 o’clock…

It will show me the actual spot my tip is aimed at from the cb to ob ( 1 o’clock )..
